Biography

Hello! My name is Dalton Hargreaves. I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. I am a Métis person, belonging to the East Woodland Metis Nation of Nova Scotia. I moved to Kamloops in 2017 to study at TRU. My academic background is in History, with a primary interest in European history from the 18th Century to the modern day.

My wife, Luciana, is Brazilin, and we met at TRU. We married in 2020 and have a cat and a rabbit. I am a practicing Catholic, and my wife is Baptist, so our shared faith is a focal point of our marriage.

My journey towards becoming an educator is arguably one of pure chance. It was not something I had actively considered upon my entrance to TRU. I had originally desired to study astronomy and physics and enter academic sciences. I later grew more interested in history and laddered into the History program at TRU. After considering my post-graduation plans, I became enamored with the idea of a career as a professor. Upon consideration though, it perplexed me to feel inspired to teach history at such a high academic level. Would people listen or appreciate my lectures?

I have always loved to work with youth and young adults, finding their positivity for life and learning awe-inspiring. After reflecting on working as an Assistant Sailing Coach for the Kelowna Yacht Club in Kelowna BC, I realized this was my calling. in my mind, seeing the passion children and youth have for learning and growing is something that could never be matched. I most of all appreciate their inquisitiveness and desire to question newly-learned ideas and problems that face them.

My desire is to teach high school social studies, as I feel I can have the best of my two passions, history and teaching our youth. I specifically desire to teach high school because of my own high school teachers. They inspired me to grow in myself and strive for better. Though I may not have a guarantee that I will teach high school, I have my own guarantee within myself that any classroom I may walk into I can bring these values with me and share them with my students. I strongly hope that the students of today, and the ones I will meet tomorrow will have the same inspiration I received from my teachers. I feel the role of the teacher is to be a great source of encouragement to our students to always strive in learning more and growing in their learning, regardless of any setbacks.

Even though I had never considered becoming a teacher in the past, I believe now more than ever, it was my calling, and it was meant to be for me. I am hopeful my students will have the same opportunities to find their true callings and I hope I can inspire them to do so just as I was inspired.

Beyond the classroom, I have a great interest in photography, both film and digital, hiking, backpacking, sailing, traveling, and sharing my time with my wife.
